John Shelby Spong was the Episcopal Bishop of Newark before his retirement in 2000. As a visiting lecturer at Harvard and at universities and churches throughout North America and the English-speaking world, he is one of the leading spokesperson for liveral Christianity.
He recently visited Helena, Montana for a weekend retreat, which we unfortunately missed but the reading of this (his most recent book) almost makes up for us missing him. His new vision of eternity is meaningful in that it helps us to reconnize the importance of our life here and now and how we strive to live it in all of its fullness.
“John Shelby Spong, the reinterpreter of Christianity for the doubtful… never specifically defines what life after death will look lie – he thinks that can’t be done – but he tells of his own experiences of teh ineffable and relates those to eternal life. Spong, known as a religious rationalist, admits he has become something of a mystic” – The Atlantic Journal-Constitution
