Pope Francis’ Interview with ‘La Vanguardia’

Pope Francis has granted another interview, this time to the Spanish daily La Vanguardia.  Two things about this are interesting to me.  The interview was done by a Jewish journalist Francis met on the plane for his recent trip to Israel.  Sitting next to this journalist was a young Palestinian journalist that Francis knew from a previous occasion….he does get around!  At the time of the meeting on the plane,
Francis entrusted the safety of the young Palestinian to this Jewish journalist.  The other interesting thing is the date of this interview, last Monday, June 9.  This was the day Francis cancelled all of his appointments after doing his morning Mass at the Domus Santa Marta in seemingly good looking health and immediately after meeting with George Pell, his new financial bull dog.  Hmm…. A picture of him taken by La Vanguardia posted with the original interview (click here)  shows him smiling and looking quite OK.  There is a lot of ugly stuff going on in the Vatican right now and the suspicious side of me wonders what Pell said to Francis that caused an “indisposition” as the Vatican spokesperson called it.

In an interview granted with Spanish-language magazine “La Vanguardia” on Monday, Pope Francis lauded Pius XII for his efforts in saving Jews, discussed Orthodox-Catholic relations, as well as the motivations behind his prayer meeting at the Vatican last Sunday.
